- The Executive Director highly values business opportunities with the European market
Santo Domingo. The Executive Director of the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic, (CEI-RD for its initials in Spanish), Dr. Jean A. Rodríguez, highlighted the many business opportunities the European market offers the Dominican Republic, where over US$688 million in exports were recorded in 2015, according to preliminary data.
The statements were pronounced by Rodriguez during the seminar “How to export to Europe”, which was held on April 27th of this year, at the CEI-RD facilities. This workshop is part of the second edition of a series of free lectures which the institution has been conducting since January of the current year. During the first edition, which took place from November, 2014 to December, 2015, over 6,000 individuals were trained.
DR among the top 10 exporters
The head of the CEI-RD emphasized that within the European Union, the Dominican Republic is among the top ten product exporters, being organic bananas, cocoa beans, cane rum, medical devices, and handmade cigars the most popular products.
Along those lines, he stated that specifically in Spain, our country is the main exporter of cane rum, “with mangoes and finished men’s shoes exports also standing out in that market”, noted Rodriguez.
CEI-RD encourages increase in exports
“Taking into account the stringent market demands we are faced with and CEI-RD’s mission as a trade promoting agency, we strive to develop activities and initiatives which like this one, contribute to bolster the exports of our goods and services to international markets” emphasized Rodriguez.
This entity, he added, under the guidelines of the administration of President Danilo Medina, seeks to achieve an effective communication between public and private sectors which serves as support to exporters and/or potential exporters; paying special attention to agricultural producers and MSME’s, with the goal of transforming them into productive exporting units, in order to work together towards the reduction of poverty and social inequality in our country.
How to export to Europe
On the seminar, Rodriguez emphasized that it was directed towards national exporters and part of the “How to Export” educational program being conducted by the CEI-RD in accordance with the work program set forth by the President of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Danilo Medina, with the goal of strengthening our national productive sector and in so doing, contribute to optimize our range of exports to international markets.
During the workshop, vital aspects of the export process were shared, like export logistics and process, the promotion of quality systems and supply chain, good national and international practices, preventive measures, participation in international fairs, and access to buyers, transportation routes, as well as the presenting of exporting companies success stories.
Participants in the workshop included the chief of the commercial section of the European Union delegation, Agnieska Osiecka; the European Union Trade Delegation Official, Humberto Perez; the Director of the Vegetable Health Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Emigdio Gómez; and the Specialist in Rules of Origin of the General Customs Office (DGA), Vanessa Rodríguez, in addition to other technical personnel from the CEI-RD.
Present among the special guests were Mr. Rodrigo Campo, Minister Counselor to the Spanish Embassy in the Dominican Republic; Reinier Davina, Commercial Delegate to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Dominican Republic; Taiana Mora Ramis, President of the Dutch chamber of commerce of the Dominican Republic; Gustavo de Hostos, President of the official Dominican-Belgian-Luxemburg Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic; as well as Mr. César Pérez, Commercial Manager of Agritrade Dominicana, who gave testimony on his company experience when exporting to Europe.
