- The investment amounts to over US$7 million.
Santo Domingo. With the initial ground breaking ceremony, the President of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Danilo Medina, formally inaugurated on Tuesday 26 of this month the start of construction of the hotel Hampton by Hilton Las Americas, with an investment of over US$7 million.
The tourism project will be located in a highly visible area in the vicinity of the Las Americas International Airport (AILA, for its initials in Spanish) and will be operated in the country by the developing firm of Spanish capital, Dominican Developments, under the standards of the Hilton Worldwide brand.
The Hampton hotels’ main focus is the upscale business tourism market, and in the particular case of the Dominican Republic, the project will be oriented towards satisfying the demand of an important number of passengers who fly abroad or return to the country through AILA, and who prefer to stay in a hotel strategically located near the airport.
Foreign investment picks up
Opening remarks were delivered by the Executive Director of the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD, for its initials in Spanish), Dr. Jean Alain Rodriguez, who highlighted with pleasure the dynamism that investments in hotel and tourism infrastructure have been experiencing in the country, which he attributed to “the strategic policies that President Danilo Medina has encouraged and backed in favor of stimulating and attracting foreign investment.”
It will have an impact on the President’s goal
“Today we are witnessing the results of these efforts through important investments that are reaching our shores, which is why it is with great optimism that we welcome this ground breaking today for the establishment of operations by the Hampton by Hilton Santo Domingo Airport Hotel, a project of great value which will have an impact on the presidential goal of creating dignified quality jobs”, emphasized Rodriguez.
In that context, the head of the CEI-RD highlighted the assistance provided for obtaining permits for the project, which was carried out “in record time-in only three months-“, through the One-Stop Shop for Investment (VUI-RD) of the Presidency of the Republic, a tool which speeds up and facilitates the procedures and permits needed for investment projects, thereby significantly reducing their time and cost.
In addition, Rodriguez favorably viewed the trust foreign investors place in our country, this being the reason why important projects have become a reality, stating “Our position as regional leaders in tourism is due to the public-private alliance with local and foreign businessmen who believe in our financial climate and have invested in the Dominican Republic”, emphasized Rodriguez.
Focused on business tourism
For his part, Mr. Lluis Salvado Morello, investing partner of Dominican Developments, highlighted that the project is budgeted for over US$7 million and will contribute 60 direct jobs.
During his presentation, Salvado Morello said that “this has been conceived as an upscale business hotel, specially keeping in mind that the city of Santo Domingo is developing a reputation as one of the main business, tourism, and historical destination of the Caribbean.”
Trust in DR’s market
Regarding the financial climate, Salvado Morello stressed that “the Dominican Republic is an attractive destination. Here we found the context and perfect habitat to execute our professional projects: a country experiencing continuous growth, with political stability, legal security, openness to foreign investments and perhaps the most important, with a solid tourism project and committed with the private sector”.
“The Caribbean continues to be an attractive market for travelers who come on business as well as for those who visit for leisure, it’s for this reason that we have conducted our study based on the quality of the project, its viability in the market, and from the point of view of the appeal of the site/location, and the frequency of flights, among others”, he remarked.
In closing, Salvado Morello stated that they were very satisfied with the support they have received from the administration of President Danilo Medina, for “from the beginning they offered us a helping hand and placed the free services of the VUI-RD at our disposition, thanks to which we have been able to develop this project so quickly”.
The main table was headed by President Medina, and included the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta; the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia; and the Executive Director of the CEI-RD, Dr. Jean Alain Rodriguez.
Also present were the founding partners of the project, Lluis Salvado Morello and Cesar Lopez Colomina; Ms Virginia Gomez, representing Hilton hotels; the mayor of Boca Chica, Daniel Ozuna; and Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, who gave the religious blessing of the event.
